Nucletron Reports Strong Growth in First Half of 2010

• Sales growth of 11.3% to EUR 57.0 million • Expansion of radiotherapy footprint, sales growth in...

Veenendaal, the Netherlands 8 Sept 2010 - Nucletron, the knowledge-based leader in radiation oncology, today announced significant growth in sales and financial results over the first half year of 2010. Sales grew by 11.3% to EUR 57.0 million, compared to EUR 51.2 million in the first half of 2009. EBITDA increased by 19.3% from EUR 6.3 million to EUR 7.5 million. Nucletron maintains its outlook for 2010 of a sales growth that exceeds the market growth of 7% and continues to expect profitability levels to reach 20% (EBITDA as % of sales) in the medium term.
Jos Lamers, CEO of Nucletron, comments: “We have realized a strong 2010 so far looking at the significant sales growth of 11%, where the market is at a 7% growth rate. Our profitability margins have also improved further. With our continued focus on innovation and global expansion, including our recently opened offices in Brazil and the Middle-East, we expect to continue to outperform the market.”
Increasing awareness of brachytherapy
As the global market leader in brachytherapy, Nucletron is aware of its special responsibility to continue developing state-of-the-art products and to support the increase in the use of brachytherapy worldwide as a critical treatment option in the fight against cancer. In March 2010 Nucletron launched a global awareness campaign to raise awareness and increase the adoption of brachytherapy as a very precise, efficient and effective form of radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer. This included a new website,
, as well as other turnkey resources aimed at educating patients, clinicians, media, and policymakers alike to the value of brachytherapy. Several new product programs and the development of new software allowing tumors to be precisely treated also drove growth in the first six months of 2010.
Expansion of radiotherapy footprint
Nucletron believes that increasing the awareness on the benefits of brachytherapy needs a strong global footprint. Nucletron opened new offices in the Middle East as well as in Brazil as a hub for Latin America, and will continue to expand its footprint in the coming years.
Sales growth in all regions
Nucletron reported a strong growth in the first half of 2010, with sales of EUR 57.0 million, compared to EUR 51.2 million in the first six months of 2009. Product sales accounted for 55% of sales, while service sales represented 45% of sales.
Brachytherapy is the company’s main activity, accounting for 54% of sales in the first half of 2010. Brachytherapy product sales showed a strong growth of 27% versus last year, the result of Nucletron’s many efforts to grow the brachytherapy market.
Sales growth was realized in all four worldwide regions. The company generated 38% of sales in Europe in the first half of 2010, with North America accounting for 30% of total sales, Asia-Pacific for 23% and emerging markets for 9%.
Nucletron’s EBITDA for the first half of 2010 increased by 19.3% to EUR 7.5 million, compared to EUR 6.3 million in the same period of 2009. This was mainly a result of the increased sales, in combination with an increased spending in medical marketing, sales and R&D.
Outlook
Nucletron maintains its outlook for 2010 of a revenue growth that will exceed the 7% growth forecast for the radiotherapy market, as announced at the publication of the 2009 results. The growth in revenues will further increase profitability, despite the ongoing higher investments in medical marketing, sales and R&D. Nucletron continues to expect profitability levels to reach 20% (EBITDA as % of sales) in the medium term. Strong cash-flow generation will enable continued reduction in debt with EUR 7.5 – 10.0 million in 2010.
The objectives for the second half of 2010 are focused on further increasing the awareness on the benefits of brachytherapy to physicians, patients and payers. Nucletron has seen good success of its approach especially in Southern Europe, and will expand this success to other parts of the world. Furthermore, it is expected that Oncentra, software for treatment planning, will pick up further momentum as it will see significant innovation in the second half of 2010, both for its external beam and for its brachytherapy offering.
About Nucletron
Nucletron provides state of the art radiotherapy solutions for cancer treatment that meet the evolving needs of patients, their caregivers and healthcare professionals around the world. Nucletron has unmatched global leadership in brachytherapy, a very precise, highly effective and well-tolerated treatment option for healthcare providers, tailored to the needs of individual patients.
Galapagos reaches agreement to acquire GlaxoSmithKline research centre in Zagreb, Croatia

R&D operations in Zagreb fulfil Galapagos’ growing R&D capacity requirements / Agreement provides...

8-Sept 2010 - Galapagos and GlaxoSmithKline today announced they have reached an agreement for Galapagos to acquire GSK’s state-of-the art research centre in Zagreb, Croatia. The arrangement, which is subject to closing conditions and is expected to be effective as of 9 September 2010, provides for ongoing employment of the staff at the centre and will provide additional capacity for Galapagos’ growing R&D requirements.
Terms of the deal include the acquisition of the research centre along with the transfer of approximately 130 staff. In addition, Galapagos will provide R&D services to GSK under a three year fee-for-service contract to the value of €14 M. Further terms were not disclosed.
The Zagreb centre comes with a strong heritage in the area of antibacterial research having served as GSK’s Macrolide Center of Excellence for Drug Discovery and before that as an R&D site for Pliva, the independent pharmaceutical company and founder of the blockbuster antibiotic azithromycin. The integrated capabilities in the operations will allow Galapagos to resource research programmes from molecule through to the clinic in alignment with its milestone-driven alliance model. The site will form the basis of a newly created third Galapagos business unit, Internal Outsourcing, that will provide flexible, additional capacity for the Galapagos Group. GSK’s senior researcher from the Zagreb site, Dr. Radan Spaventi, will join the Galapagos Executive Team as Senior Vice President.
“With our eight strategic alliances, we have a need to expand our discovery and development organisation. The team in Zagreb brings a proven track record and expertise in disease and discovery development that matches that of our current pharmaceutical alliances,” said Onno van de Stolpe, CEO of Galapagos. “The acquisition answers our expansion needs and, by bringing a majority of our outsourced programs back in house, we can achieve significant cost savings in R&D.”
The arrangement to transfer operations of the large, pharma-standard, R&D operations along with the transfer of the GSK employees was reached following GSK’s announcement in February 2010 to cease R&D activity at Zagreb as part of a site rationalisation initiative.
Moncef Slaoui, Chairman of GSK Research and Development, said: “This is a great outcome for GSK and Galapagos as it meets the capacity requirements of both companies and at the same time assures continuity of employment and a preservation of expertise at this excellent scientific facility.”
“Today’s acquisition fits very well into our financial strategy to control costs and protect downside risks while managing the tremendous growth of our alliances business,” stated Guillaume Jetten, Chief Financial Officer of Galapagos. “Furthermore, the R&D contract with GSK and additional overflow work from within the Group will substantially cover our internal targets for site capacity utilisation. We remain confident of our full year guidance for revenues of at least €135 M with positive operating income and cash flow, and a positive net result in 2010.”
About GlaxoSmithKline
GlaxoSmithKline – one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies – is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.
About Galapagos
Galapagos (Euronext: GLPG; OTC: GLPYY) is a mid-size biotechnology company specialized in the discovery and development of small molecule and antibody therapies with novel modes-of-action. The Company is progressing one of the largest pipelines in biotech, with six clinical and over 50 small molecule discovery/pre-clinical programs. Through risk/reward-sharing alliances with GlaxoSmithKline, Lilly, Janssen Pharmaceutica, Merck & Co., Roche and Servier, Galapagos is eligible to receive up to €3.3 billion in downstream milestones, plus royalties. Following the acquisition of the Zagreb research center, the Galapagos Group has over 800 employees and operates facilities in seven countries, with global headquarters in Mechelen, Belgium.

DSM BioSolutions, DSM's microbial fermentation CMO business unit and PolyTherics Limited announced...

DELFT, Netherlands, Sept. 7 - DSM BioSolutions ("DSM"), DSM's microbial fermentation CMO business unit and PolyTherics Limited ("PolyTherics"), an innovator in precision engineering of proteins, today announced that they have entered into an agreement for the process development and manufacture of PolyTherics' lead biobetter product, HiPEG(TM) IFN alpha-2a.

PolyTherics has applied its HiPEG(TM) site-specific PEGylation technology to interferon alpha to produce a product (HiPEG(TM) IFN alpha-2a) that has eight-fold higher activity than a marketed PEGylated interferon in vitro and a comparable half-life in a preclinical study.

HiPEG(TM) specifically attaches poly(ethylene) glycol (PEG) to a histidine tag at the end of the protein; histidine tags are commonly used to improve protein stability and to facilitate the purification of proteins. PolyTherics is seeking partners for the development of HiPEG(TM) IFN alpha-2a for hepatitis C.

DSM has successfully started development, scale-up and manufacture of the recombinant his-tagged IFN alpha-2a. PolyTherics will transfer its proprietary HiPEG PEGylation method to DSM so that the process can also be scaled-up. The companies intend to develop a robust process to produce sufficient material for preclinical development and then for cGMP production of HiPEG(TM) IFN alpha-2a for clinical development.

Keith Powell, CEO of PolyTherics, stated that, "The transfer of the production of our lead product to a contract manufacturer is a major milestone for PolyTherics and is the beginning of the development stage of its first biobetter drug."

Villaume Kal, Vice-President of DSM BioSolutions stated, "We are delighted to work with PolyTherics on this promising biobetter compound. Our technology, operational excellence, and outstanding cGMP and compliance record with the EMA and FDA allows us to serve this important customer and to develop, scale-up and manufacture their preclinical and clinical material".

No financial terms will be disclosed.

PolyTherics Limited
PolyTherics is a biopharmaceutical company that applies precision chemistry to develop improved protein and peptide-based drugs. It received investment of 2.3 million pounds Sterling from Imperial Innovations Group plc, Longbow Capital LLP and The Capital Fund in June 2007 and a further 3.0 million pounds Sterling investment from the same syndicate in February 2010.

PolyTherics has developed three proprietary technologies for attaching the polymer poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to any therapeutic peptide or protein in a targeted fashion. PEGylation slows elimination from the body, thereby improving half-life and potentially reducing drug treatment frequency, decreasing side effects and improving patient compliance.

PEGylated products derived from PolyTherics' technologies are more homogeneous than those derived from traditional methods, resulting in reduced complexity of downstream processing, more consistent product quality and cost-effective manufacture. PEGylation is an established method for improving drugs and nine PEGylated products are already approved for therapeutic use worldwide.

For more information, please visit:

DSM BioSolutions - Microbial Fermentation
DSM BioSolutions, part of the DSM Pharma cluster, offers a wide range of customer services ranging from process development to large scale production, all in the field of microbial fermentation. Expertise covers microbial strain construction and improvement, fermentation process development and product recovery and purification. DSM's production infrastructure for fermentation and associated product recovery and purification is based in a multipurpose facility in Capua, Italy, which currently produces pharmaceutical intermediates and APIs (with the exception of beta-lactams) and food/nutrition-related products. In the Pharma area, production lines are available for cGMP manufacturing of small molecules and pharmaceutical proteins. The facilities comply with all relevant regulations and are regularly inspected by the respective authorities (e.g. EMA and FDA).

For more information, please visit

DSM - the Life Sciences and Materials Sciences Company
Royal DSM N.V. creates solutions that nourish, protect and improve performance. Its end markets include human and animal nutrition and health, personal care, pharmaceuticals, automotive, coatings and paint, electrical and electronics, life protection and housing. DSM manages its business with a focus on the triple bottom line of economic performance, environmental quality and social responsibility, which it pursues simultaneously and in parallel. DSM has annual net sales of about euro 8 billion and employs some 22,700 people worldwide. The company is headquartered in the Netherlands, with locations on five continents. DSM is listed on Euronext Amsterdam.

For more information, please visit
